Sometimes I have been guilty of thinking that the upper bouts on say, 330's or 381's, looked slightly too large, not that they aren't beautiful guitars.
They aren't typical cutouts of a normal non-cut, which would follow the contour lines of the original shapes they had been derived from.
Anybody seen the new Gibson Johnny A model? The cutaways follow the form just fine, and look just plain stupid!
Yet another thing Rickenbackers have gotten right, imho.
