Right now, I have my eye on getting a new 4003 bass in blue. As far as I know, you can only get it in the midnight blue color which appears nearly black in certain types of lighting.

Is anyone aware of "Blue Burst"? Was this a discontinued color? And is there any possible way I can get it? I would gladly pay extra if Rickenbacker can accommodate me! Hell, I would love to see this color come back...

Here's a video with a guy that has it:

It was a "color of the year", and no longer available. Finding a used one is your best bet, but you will pay a premium for BlueBurst.

I wanted Midnight B which was not available so I bought a BB. I don't regret it. On the contrary ...I am very happy with it.
I think it should be a default color ...It's better looking than the FL.

Blueburst was the 2005 RIC Color of the Year.

Blueburst was available as a color choice on instruments ordered in 2005. If you want this finish, you'll have to look for pre-owned Blueburst 4003 basses.

The newest Mid Blue instruments I have seen are looking pretty cool. And I hate blue guitars so that's really saying something.

I agree, I feel it should be a default color....If you have a color that is coveted and will sell, why not??

So is there NO way I can special order/custom shop it? I heard Gibson does stuff like that - I was just curious if Rickenbacker would if the price was right...

RIC doesn't have a custom shop - they're just too busy trying to keep up with standard orders.

But, there are several people who could refinish one to factory specs. Forum member jingle_jangle is one of them, but I think he's got quite a wait on refinishing jobs too...

I think back in the day this was the case, but like CJ said, RIC is more concerned with reducing their overall backlog than with meeting time-consuming one-off demands.

The problem with refinishing a solid color bass into a burst finish (if you went that route after trying a Mid Blue bass) is that you aren't likely to get the kind of wood grain people at RIC would have selected for a burst. It will likely be plainer.

Maybe in a few years something like a custom shop will return--after all, I have seen the backlog improve each year for the past couple of years. But I don't know. On the flip side RIC have vastly improved what it is they are continuing to sell in the process of streamlining how they make it.

He's done atleast one BB re-finish in the past too.

If you can wait for the right deal, one may show up at less than the premium prices that the current eBay listings ask--I did and got one last summer. The search was over a year long.
It's also possible to get a mapleglo one and have it re-fined by a third party.
I for one wouldn't mind if Midnight was supplanted by BB.
