I'm 16 i've been playing for 5 years and have recently started finding it hard to play the more complex songs on my old squier i'm learning level 42 and lots of fast funk and i was wondering is it to early to be thinking rickenbacker, i have been saving for a year or 2 now and i'm very close to having the funds

Plz advise

Welcome, Jim!

No, it is not too early, many of us got our first Ricks around the same age as you.

Welcome Jim,

I got my first Rick bass when I was 17 (like you, after an extended period of saving) - it was a battered second hand number. I still have it 30 years on. Provided your finances are sorted, it's unlikely that you will regret buying a Rickenbacker bass.

The fact that you played 5 years on a Squier shows real commitment to the art. I'd say go for it. Of course, better gear will only make you a marginally better player, if that. Speed comes with time. Of course, if your Squier is poorly set up, or the quality isn't there in the axe to have it set up properly, then a better bass will make it easier to showcase the talent you already have.

Better basses don't necessarily make you more capable of playing harder stuff, IMHO. They just make it more fun to play. You'll notice a bigger difference in the tonal qualities, though.

Maestro

You may as well"cut to the chase" & buy the best. I've been playing over 30 years & Mark King would lose me with both arms tied up his back ! I got my JG 4003 6 years ago paid £1000 for it. Think the going rate now is around the £1500 mark. Get along to a guitar shop & try one. Your mind will be made up for you.

It's time to get the Rickenbacker bass you want.
