What gives with the new packaged RIC strings they seem to have a 46 bottom E.
Is this correct? are they compressed or regular rounds? anyone using them?

well, the strings on that particular auction are for sure compressed. I THINK that there may have been a change in string manufacturers the past year or two. At the last NAMM show here, I noticed they looked more like D'Addario to me as opposed to the SIT sets we're used to.

The only thing we've done is adjust the gauges slightly to balance out the tension, to bring them more in line with competitive sets, and add retail packaging more conducive to retail store sales.

The retail sets and what we supply on guitars from the factory have all now been coordinated and you'll note the distinctive new bright chrome ball ends that distinguish our sets.

One part of this project is to place more of our sets in the stores throughout the world . . . this auction is evidence of that success . . . so that it's easier for owners to get exact replacements. It also places us in the string market as a serious contender.

It seems the previous set had a A 34 and E 42, the new ones run 10 to 46! That has bumped up the string gauge on the 2 bass strings a fair bit!! I always liked the 42 bass E. I even put them on my other guitars as well! Ahhh all set up too!

I'd like to know more re why a gauge change was made, I'll save my reservation till then. But I hate thick strings, and love the old 10 to 42, I'm going to need some persuasion to change other than that I'm going to see who'll sell me some of those (defect)RIC NOS 10 -42 cheap and ASAP LOL! But will the 10 to 42 still be made by Ric ?????

You better take a closer look at your strings there! Only the gauging has changed and then quite slightly.

Yes If you like the 10 42 get them while you can, I suppose Pick of the Ricks will get orders. 10 42 are perfect,,,,,that's what I call custom light

Still meant to be compressed according to the chief!

To each his own but you'll find most string makers consider the 10-46 to "standard" and 42's normally in a 9-42 "light" set. It gives a lot more meaty sound in the bass string range with very little change in the overall feel.

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining in fact I'm looking forward in trying them out later this week.
It's just on first inspection out of the packet they appear different to the "older" 10-42 set which I suppose they are.

I've also noticed the new 12 string set is sporting the slightly more "meaty" 46 as well which might help some folks with the pulling sharp thing at the 3rd fret, I guess this could be a very smart move on your part ;)

My 660/12 is in need of a string change soon and I'll be trying out a new set on that as well :D

Peace, and may your "Jangle be the Jangliest of all Jangle's"
