There was a mention of this in my 650 thread. There is a good description/story in Tony Bacon's Rickenbacker book. Invented by James Gross.

Short answer: It's used to make a 12 string into a 6 string...

I did Google this, and came up with this: http://home.provide.net/~cfh/rick.html

I'd like to see one of those in action. I can't imagine how it works.

The "teeth" are placed over the octave strings and pull them down so you don't hit them...

Here's a Rickenbacker promotional photograph of the "Convertible Guitars" with the converter comb:

That thing looks like something one might have bought from a thrift shop to cut one's hair, back in the late 60's 70's. Alas I don't have the long hair for it now.

Actually this device is pretty niffty, Ok you cannot bend strings but it looks as if it works OK. It would be a real talking piece at any rate.

Ok Thanks for enlightening me cjj:D ! It would be a very good device, now if you could whip it on in a flash and remove it that would be perfect, but we both know the answer to that question
