unfortunately the pickups are potted so there is no way to inspect them, but there will be spare parts as long as Rickenbacker will continue making 4004 and 650c so long live Lemmy! ![]() still haven't the guitar with me, going to have it in approximately one week, then I will tell you my impressions. ![]() |

I did not mean that you should inspect the pickup per se. You should check out everthing else leading to the pickup that might affect its performance: bad solder joint and related conductivity & grounding issues; faulty potentiometer(s), defective pickup selection switch -- you know, those sorts of things. A good tech could rule these out as possible causes in a few minutes. You might get lucky and discover something else causing the problem. It would be frustrating if you replaced the pickup and discovered that you still had the same problem, you know what I mean...? Here's an example-- my experience buying my used 330/6 JG. I went to the guitar store to check it out. This is a very reputable store, and an authorized Rick dealer. I had never played a Rick before, so I was checking it out, getting familiar with the controls, etc. I discovered that the neck pickup was not working. I did not know the cause/what component might be defective, but a defective pickup did not occur to me. I took the guitar out to the salesman and told him. He plugged into an amp to confirm, and indeed, no sound from the neck pickup. Right there on the spot he removed pickguard assembly, flipped it over and sprayed contact cleaner into one of the pots. This guy was so competent and fast that I did not see how he determined exactly which pot to clean, and how he knew it was not the pickup selector switch. (I guess it would be reasonable to assume that the volume pot would be the most likely culprit.) This did the trick, and quickly reassembled the guitar. All this took about five minutes. I was concerned about the future performance of the pot, and he said it would be OK, but it is still troublesome at times.... I bought it anyway, as it was a good deal. (The seller said he should have listed it for $100 more, and I knew he was right.) Back to the beginning: It would be reasonable to assume that the seller of your guitar has had it thoroughly examined and had determined without a doubt that the pickup was bad, but that's not always the case. Please keep us in the loop. |

Good idea to get the "dead" pickup as part of this transaction. Then you can send it to Sergio in Portugal to rewind it or fix it and you'll have the option to reinstall it later on. You can contact Sergio through the Rick Resource Forum.... (Winding Up with the Best). Ric enthusiasts from all over the world send their Ric pickups to Sergio for assistance. There are probably many, many divergent views on the subject of a replacement part lessening the value of an instrument. |

Hi Thischarmingman. I hope that forearm injury is OK, and your back to playing soon. But yes rest it if that's what the good Doctor recommends! It's not serious or long term I hope! That guitar will be arriving soon so hope it heals fast. |

I've had epicondylitis, also. I couldn't pick up anything with my fretting hand that was more than a pound in weight. I seriously thought I would never pick up the guitar again, and thought about learning the blues harp, exclusively. (What other musical instrument doesn't require a lot of finger/hand movement?) It took me about nine months before I could return to the guitar. I hope yours clears up well before then. (But I knew that if I continued to abuse my hand/elbow and not allow it to heal completely that I might sustain a lifetime of misery.) Take care, and get well soon. (I'm hoping you can still take & post a couple of photos of it, anyway.... ![]() |
