Got an AC15C1 and a Rick 330. I'm sure I'm not the only here.
Would love to hear what settings (both amp and guitar) settings people are using for this combo.
I'd especially love to nail REM (espec. pageant era) tones, or The Smiths (espec. this charming man!)

Congrats on a killer combo of amp and axe.

Be prepared for several folks on here to tell you that you won't be able to reproduce those tones you seek because Marr used a Telecaster on This Charming Man and Buck didn't have a Vox amp until years after Pageant (I believe he was using Fenders and an Ampeg Gemini II on their earlier recordings).

That having been said, you can certainly get really close. Although it's always good to trade notes on amp settings, you've got a combo that will be difficult to make sound bad, so set it the way it sounds best to you and have fun with it.

To be honest I'm finding the amp over bright in general (I'm aggressively breaking the speaker in the see if that helps), and struggling to find a balance of suitable jangly brightness and ear-splitting harshness. I guess I've not yet found a setting that really brought out the natural voice of the instrument (based on recordings).

Marr used a Roland Jazz Chorus for the first album.

Peter Buck only used the Ampeg for Murmur because his Fender amp was in the shop.

Let's get back on track and talk settings for the AC15 and Rick.

Can you not try it out yourself? Ultimately, the sound you find the most appealing is up to you to find. EQs on an amp aren't half of it.

I set all of mine, on any amp, to midnight. This is a neutral setting that requires more from the player than the amp itself.

Sure, I've been trying for a couple of months. Wouldn't just leave such lovely gear upstairs and head to the forums now, would I?

Like I said, I'm struggling to get the natural and characterful tones that I've heard others get, even just on youtube. Maybe it says something about me as a player (no good) or a person (never satisfied and wanting too much). I struggle to get a bright sound without it being ear-splitting. And how I've tried. Who out there favours a particular pickup selector setting? Who's using the guitar knobs or leaving them all up?

Maybe it's the interactive EQ and I should add an EQ pedal like many do. Maybe I'm going wrong by trying to find a setting that'll cover the variety of everything I want to play.

i've got an ac30 and a couple ricks. i know what you're saying... try treble and bass up mid way and cut maybe around 3/4 up. crank it up enough to get a bit of balls. for my ac30, that usually means at least halfway up (with a hotplate).

Crunchy - Top Boost (Bass, Treble and Volume) at 1 o'clock, Master at 9 o'clock.

Early Who type - Bass 10 o'clock, Treble 2 o'clock, Volume at one third,Master all the way

But as said earlier, hard to create any bad sound with this combination. Some compression in front of it too.

he once stated that "the smiths" was recorded with the guitar signal splitted into two vintage fender amps by one old roland stereo chorus...the whole thing then is kinda of a tube-based-super-deluxe-jazz-chorus .

the jc was probably used mostly for the live sets.



Rick and Vox is probably the best winning combination out there (hope you have an uk made one though)...settings? there is no amp in the world that is plug and play like vox. just start with all the knobs at 12 and adjust to your taste avoiding extreme settings...
