No that's wrong... The tuning relationship between all the strings of the guitar is determined by the overall length of each string from where the strings leave the nut until they hit the bridge - and this mutual tonal distance is kept all the way up no matter where you put a barre. Your index finger in a barre chord produces an exact copy of the nut tonewise except in different keys.

That's an excellent point. The overall length of the string always matters when talking about bisecting its length. This is making for a very interesting discussion...

I don't believe that's what iiipopes is talking about. He's referring to fretted notes sounding out of tune due to deflection, especially on first position chords (being that they're close to the nut).

Yes.

Hey, iiipopes, what do these individual nut shims look like? I've never heard of doing that before.

This is what I studied to work on my own instruments:

He does round off the math. In a "correct" mathematical placement of 2^1/12, the better approximation is 1.0495631, and round the final numbers to the nearest thousandth. Otherwise you get "creep" and are off a few thou by the time you reach the end of the fretboard.

Again, all strings have different cores and wraps. So when you compensate a nut, it has to be for a specific brand, model and gauge of string. Change, and you risk having to change the compensation.

Yes.

Again, I was not directly responding to you when I wrote that post. ;)

I actually think that istalling a Buzz feiten system is a bit of over reacting. A pro set up - which means correct placement of the nut, correct distance from the strings to the fingerboard (very important) next to the nut and - of course - correct adjustent of the intonation at the bridge will bring any quality guitar so much in tune that most people can't hear anything wrong. A Rickenbacker - and most quality guitars as well - set up like that won't need Buzz Feiten.
