Closet queens? :shock:

Well, I'm glad mine is out of the closet...

OK, so here's a topic for you. Will a Rick still be playable after 100? 200? 300 years? Everything else seems disposable by comparison. My bass is almost 40 years old and is rock solid.

I think I would be more concerned with the hardware than the wood. There's the example of stradivarius violins that just get better after hundreds of years, but they don't have to deal with rust and metal fatigue. Then there's the issue of magnets wearing outs, etc.

Wine eventually turns to liquid muck, but there's a peak for it; pickups are the same way.

This could get quite philosophical... do we actually really ever own our rics? or are we mere custodians of them for the next playing generation? :ugeek:

My '76 L6-S has Bill Lawrence pickups that were suppose to be the hottest at that time. Now they're weaker than your average Alnico II. About on par with most modern Ric pickups, though. Sorry, I was just kidding. When my wife came back from Italy she was wild about red wine vinegars. (Vinegar that was made from wine.)

Maple will last hundreds and hundreds of years... so theoretically a Rickenbacker will last that amount of years too - unless you leave it on the ground in a moistured forrest But... then there's the construction thing - and what you do to your guitar during these all those years. Modern glues like yellow glue probably won't last as long a hot hide glue (furnitures found in closed airtight cavities in Cheops has lasted more than 6,000 years without the hide glue losing strength). Still, regluing lose Rick parts will do the trick. Then there's maintenance i general. An all too dry environment will cut years of your Ricks estimated lifetime - as will extreme moisture - not to mention rapid shifts in temperature. Townshend-like behavior will also cut of the lifetime... Anyway, a Rickenbacker is in many ways build like a violin - and some of the finest, miost expensive, and still going strong - were made in Italy 500 years or more ago... So... I think with a little care and no accidents most guitar players will live significantly shorter than their Rickenbackers. History already have given us a lots of examples.
