Hi

I have been posied to purchase a Rickenbacker for a few years now. I have never played the 12 string version. I play in a garage band and we play modern rock and pop music.I value the opinon of the Rickenbacker forum members would you stay with the 12 or select Iconic the 12 string model? I have been impressed with the construction of the guitar and the tone. :D

Many folks on the forum have at least one of each.

That would be the ideal situation, having both the 6 & 12 models. You'll get more mileage with different music styles from the 6-string,while the 12 will bring a more retro '60s sound to the table. It has a narrow string spacing not everyone goes for, you'd have to check it out if you've never played one.

I bought a 370/12 after longing years for one, then I bought a 360/6 about ten years later. The 370 has a unique sound that no other guitar can quite reproduce. Since I love that sound, I had to have that guitar. The 360 can produce a much wider variety of sounds, is much easier to play, and is much easier to keep in tune. It comes within about 80% of being able to do the 370/12's sound, but that remaining 20% is always going to be there as a definite difference. Its like having a birthday cake with no icing. For playing -- I play my 6-string maybe 20 times for every one time I play the 370/12.

I have both the 360 and the 360/12C63 and I love them both. It will take a while to get used to the 12 string. If your looking to reproduce that Beatle sound the 360/12C63 will do that for you. This is the Ric I always wanted.

If you can only really choose the one guitar, and don't have a closet full of 6 strings, then in that case I would simply go with a 6 string as it is very versatile.

If however on the other hand you have lots of other 6 strings then in that case I'd go with a 12 string. That was easy!

However which 6 or 12 you get, you will still have to make the decision as to which model Rickenbacker you should choose. It's probably best to look at the Models Tab at the top of the page, that will give you a rundown of the spec's.

Having said that they all sound very good!

Thanks everyone for your response. It is very much appreciated.

I do have a three six strings an ES335,58 les Paul Reissue and AM Delux Strat. My strat is a good guitar but not a great guitar. The Noiseless pickups are just okay although the fit and finish is pretty good. So I was thinking of a Ric 360 as a great replacement. I do use the Gibsons when I need a thicker tone. But I think the Rick would be a high quality replacement. If not I should get a Rick anyway. I have played a 620

Rick360 - so you have a Gretsch Country Gentlemen great guitar.Played one many times.

I'm an oddity in that I was very displeased with my 360, but love my 620/12. If people ask me about Rickenbacker, I point them toward the twelve string models. I find that, while Rickenbacker six strings have a unique sound, you're getting a broader sound with the twelve strings. I didn't enjoy recording with my 360, either; the 620/12 is always reliable when switching from guitar to guitar, so I don't have to make volume adjustments.

Now that I record direct, instead of with a mic (Which I did for most of my albums; I only recently switched to direct), I find that the 620/12 is even more upfront than my regular guitars. I really don't have to use compression much either.

Obviously, there are plenty of people who love their 360s, and all Rickenbacker guitars are well made. I don't think every model is appropriate for every player, so it is up to the player to decide which model is best for them. Had I played a 360 before I received one, I would have gone with a twelve string model.

I just like to offer a different POV.

Hey thanks for your point of view. I really appreciate it. Any investment in a quality instrument is one that I take with consideration. Over the years I have made some wrong decisions on instruments that I regretted. So I plan on making the right decison so that I can keep the instrument.

I do need to ask. What style of music have you been recording with your Rick?

Listen for yourself.

Experimental, Ambient, and Avant-Garde. I recorded three or four songs on previous albums with the 360, but these are obviously with a 620/12.
