Dear Mr. Hall:

I was wondering if there would be any way in creation I could obtain a newly manufactured 4003 series 5-String. A traditional Sunburst would be my color preference. Stereo jack, if possible. Having been a production/plant manager, I'm familiar with "left-over" stock and thought, perhaps, if you had the parts necessary this could be accomplished. I would pay whatever amount necessary to acquire this instrument. I'm finally in a financial position to be able to do so. I live in St. Louis, MO, and have about 5 Ric outlets in the area from which to place the order.

I currently own two Rics. A 1978 4001 (used-to-be) white fretless (a predecessor of yours at Rickenbacker helped facilitate me getting that baby), and a 1999 4003 Mapleglo - my current stage instrument. Both were purchased new. The addition of the 4003 Series 5-string would complete the set!

So, if you've ever wanted to make an about-to-be retiree's day...

Best regards,

Mike

Yeah, we'd all like one, but don't hold your breath. It's not in their current line-up, so unless you're going to order 150 of them, those 5 dealers probably can't help you.

Personally, I'd like a new 8-string. (dream... dream...)

Purchase a new regular 4003 and have it converted. Contact Ric5 on either this forum or the RR forum for details.

Ric5, aka Jeff Rath, hasn't been allowed over at the RRF for several years, but he can be found here and over at TalkBass. You should try a real 4003S5 before you spend to have a 4003 converted. The string spacing is REAL tight.

Thanks, everyone. I'm leaning toward OEM, but...

Rickenbacker made a 4003s5 and a 4004cii5. Both are currently discontinued.

I have converted a few 4003 and 4004 basses into 5 string basses. I mainly do it for my own use but I have done a few for others. I am pretty busy and it is a lot a labor and there is not much money in the conversion business.

I prefer the older 4004 basses converted into 5 string basses.

Very nice, Jeff! Beautiful work. I especially like the Van Halen Rick bass. 8-)
