I sold a Rickenbacker on ebay. Not the first time I have done so. But the bass was confiscated by the Global Shipping Program. This was their email letter to me.

*****************************************

Concerning the Rickenbacker Bass; item 332362357013 (OREUSA11033938388GB) SR# 1-130853870417

Hello Jeff,

Thank you for contacting eBay regarding the Rickenbacker Bass; item 332362357013, you sold recently. I understand that you have some concerns about what happened to the shipment of the bass through our Global Shipping Program. My name is Bear and I would be more than happy to look into this with you.

I looked into this and I found that we could not deliver this item to you because your item has parts or pieces made with Wood. Items made with certain types of wood, particularly the rose wood used in many fret boards, are restricted for import by CITES Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Please understand that our shipping partners need to abide by all customs laws and we did not intend for this to happen. Because of this, our shipping partners will refund your customer out of their pocket and then liquidate the item in order to recoup some of their losses. You'll be keeping the payment for this and it won't be returned to you

The good news is that this is actually a protection for both you and your customer, we do not want any customs or shipping company questioning you on the product. It's also a rare circumstance as we try to block these from being listed through the Global Shipping Program.

I wish your customer would have received the bass instead of this outcome, it looks like a fine instrument. I assure you we make the best attempt to deliver packages and avoid this.

Thank you for your understanding in the difficult situation.

Have a wonderful day, and thanks for choosing eBay!

Bear P

Wow that's a real kick, Ric5. Sounds like an operation moving into shady territory. I'm sure they will just sell the bass at a higher price. Certain woods are prohibited, but these shipping "partners" are taking advantage of the situation. Plus I'd be suspect of anyone calling himself Bear...

This is some sort of joke surely. Rickenbacker themselves have no problem shipping basses around the world so why should you?
And as has been previously mentioned by Ricslinger,an official of a shipping company sighing off as "Bear"?
Sounds suspect to me.

It´s actually nothing funny with the name "Bear". In America could could be one of the Natives. Many Indians have names that derive from nature. Sitting Bull being the most famous I suppose.
"Bear" or "Bjoern" is a common first name in Scandinavia where I live. Also some Germans have it.
No, the funny thing is tha fact that the person, being an official with the Ebay, as I understand it, signs with "P". "P" is not a name. "Pee" could theoreticcaly be but isn´t.
The reason for me being a bit sarcastic in my first posting, is that the mail contains several weird statements. For exampel, the bass is confiscated by the Ebay or the shipping Company and not the customs. It´s not Ebays or a shipping companys thing to search the contents of the parcels. It´s for the customs. Altough the deal is broken off the vendor can keep the money and the buyer is compensated by the shipping Company :?: :?: "our shipping partners will refund your customer out of their pocket and then liquidate the item in order to recoup some of their losses. You'll be keeping the payment for this and it won't be returned to you" :?: Yeah, really :?: :? The normal routine is that the money is paid back to the buyer from the vendor. "then liquidate the item in order to recoup some of their losses" :?: :? :?: Definately not normal routine in Europé (as far as I know).
But of course, everything could be completely different in the USA. I live in Europe and maybe we have different ideas. 8-)
When it comes to Rickenbackers exports it has been mention several times that they don´t use any prohibited woods in their instruments anymore. Since years actually.
And what about Gibson? I´ve heard they are back to rosewood. True :?: :?
Well, this biz is surrounded by "Stories". Isn´t it

There was an identical scenario surrounding a Music Man Stingray. ebay returned the bass to the seller. Just like they should in such a case.

So the lesson to be learned here is don't ever ship a bass or a guitar and use ebay's global shipping program. They may seize it and you may never see the bass again. If it is made from wood they may seize it claiming it is a protected species even though it isn't. God forbid you ship a rare or collectable instrument. So if you use ebay make sure the global shipping option is unchecked. If the buyer is overseas then ship it a different way.

You have been warned.

CITES is restricting shipping any Rosewood or an instrument that contains rosewood across international borders. If you ship a Rickenbacker with a rosewood fretboard overseas it may get confiscated. And it could get to the point where touring musicians will get their instruments confiscated when they travel with them.

This thread is astounding that E-Bay's Shipping Partners takes possession .... :o this will probably greatly curtail the international shipping of instruments. And who at the Freight Forwarder's office is the so-called "authority" on classifying which fret boards are allowable and which are not ??

Nothing sounds very legitimate about this at all ... :(
