I read an interview with Gary Moore once where he said that George had told him that the fingering was, from low E string (6th string), to high (1st string): 3x3213, using your thumb to fret the low G, which gives a G9sus4 with no fifth (D).
This sounds right to me, but I don't have a 12 string.

One thing that makes the chord so big and full is George Martin hitting the G octaves on the grand piano. Lennon with acoustic guitar, Mac on the G bass note and Harrison on the Rick 12. All the notes stated in this thread except the low A, a 2nd note in the scale, are repeated in the various versions that have been presented. Like most all guitarists, we play the Gsus4th 353533. One thing for sure, it's a great sound.

I play it a couple of differnt ways. almost like the above mentioned way but 355533 instead. Then I thought that John played (starting with the open D) 0231. I play the bass note as playing a D and it's fifth, A.

The 4 notes on the outro give you a clue to the intro chord.
In the intro, I think there's at least 3 of them playing different inversions of a Dm7 with an added G.
I think McCartney hits a fretted D on the bass, and Ringo hits a drum.
If you're on your own, the barred Gsus4 sounds close.

tried many variations over the years but the 353533 as mentioned i find is the closest. You really need a combo of intruments to get the sound. Our tribute band does it with:
360/12 - 353533 (Gsus4?) 325/6 - F chord bass - D
i read somewhere that the piano played the Gsus4 and the 12 string some variation and that you really need the piano to get the full effect ...but the above with just the 3 guitars i think sounds as close as your going to achieve without the piano

The Beatles Complete Scores by Wise Publications transcribe it as a Gsus4 on the 12 string guitar (355533), d-g-c-g on John´s 6 string (xx0013) and a D in the bass. This seems to be right to me. The scores say nothing about the piano, but there is one hitting a low d and some of the other notes.

The legend has it that Gary Moore once asked George Harrison what is the famous chord in question and when Harrison showed it to him, Moore looked at him puzzled and aksed: "Are you sure??" ;) Amir www.myspace.com/rickenbackers
