When it comes to Ric 12 strings, I really like the Beach Boys' cover of "California Dreamin".

I'm actually not convinced on "Bad To Me" either, because I think I read that it was released in '63, and George Harrison didn't even get his 12 string until Feb 1964, so it's probably something else, as you mentioned.

Quite right. I looked for my 7" copy to check last night, but it turned out I never had one. Must have been my brother's (I SAID I had a good memory!).

But now that I come to think of it, Billy J's voice was doubled in the same way as the guitar on those early singles. We'll have to ask George Martin...

Yes, "Bad To Me" was released in 1963. The song was recorded during a session at Abbey Road on June 27th. If George Martin doesn't remember the instrumentation, check with Paul McCartney. He was there when Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas recorded the song.

Til I am Myself, Diamond Mine, Rose Coloured Glasses are the ones I remember seeing played with a Ric. Greg Keelor played both 330/12 and 330/6 on their tunes.

Another fab 4 - "Anytime At All" (mostly riffs, I believe). I love that song.

In case you didn't know, Roger McGuinn plays the 12 string on that song.

"I Call Your Name" is one of the first songs recorded with Ricky 360/12 #2.

Someone already mentioned "You Can't Do That", which is the first recording of George's 12 string Ricky. I haven't got my Lewisohn with me as I'm at the office. I'll check the date but I think it was February 25, 1964 (George's 21st birthday). There's a great pic of George (wearing his Ricky 12) getting cufflinks from Dick James as a birthday gift in the studio.

"You Can't Do That" was recorded on February 25, 1964. However, according to "The Beatles a diary" by Barry Miles, George Harrison was born at 11:42 PM on February 24, 1943 not the 25th as is listed in almost every Beatles birthday notation. The story goes that even George was under the impression he was born on the 25th. A bizarre twist in fun facts about the Fab Four. It appears George was ahead of his time, at the very least, 18 minutes.

The Beatles Recording Sessions by Mark Lewisohn has a great photo on pages 38-39 that shows the Fab Four in Abbey Road Studio 2 at 11:40am recording "You Can't Do That" (the photo includes the clock on the wall). George is holding his new Rickenbacker 360/12 and John his new 325 (with the cool Vox Python strap). The studio log has them recording nine takes (four complete) of "You Can't Do That" from 10am to 1:00pm.

You guys have it right, the first Beatle song to be recorded with the 360/12OS was "You Can't Do That" on George's 21st Birthday.
