Post subject:  Schaller Machine Heads Part No.For Rick 610?

Hi Again,

As I live in the UK I believe I am unable to order directly from the boutique, so wondered if anyone could advise on the correct part number for the Schaller machine heads used on the 610's?

I know they are generically called 'Schaller M6 mini's', but having visited their website there seems to be a plethora of options under the M6 mini section.

I bought my 610 second hand, and it came with Schaller locking tuners, which I think are a little too heavy for the guitar, and would like to buy the same set that came as stock when the 610 was introduced.

I think part no 506a is probably correct, but wanted to ask the experts-You guys on this forum.

Thanks In Advance
Scott

I don't believe any 610's left the factory with Schallers. I bet if you look on the back of the head you'll see a couple of screw holes for the original Kluson type keys, for which there's a modern, higher quality replacement in the boutique. You should be able to use either the long or short shaft on this guitar.

You can certainly make the Schaller's fit, and they're fine keys, just not like the original.

Hi John,

Many thanks for getting back to me.

I've taken the Shaller locking tuners off, and it looks to me that whatever the original tuners were, they were just held in place by the one screw.

Here's a pic.The screw hole on the inside is where the original tuners were attached to.

I don't really want to drill anymore holes than the two already there, so would probably go with the ones which would fit the old holes.

Any ideas what they actually were if they were just attached via the one screw?

Thanks

John, just checked the site here and under the archived literature the documentation does state that 610's came with Schallers.

Wonder if any 610 owners out there might be able to chime in here?

Thanks Again

Well, there you have it. I would have said that we stopped making these before we switched but your headstock shows that the catalog was right. Still, it looks like this guitar has had both types at one time or another, which differ in the orientation of the mounting tab.

The southern-most mounting holes would be the factory ones, as we use only the M6 Mini-A, since you can't use the other type on a 12-string guitar. You want the 00525 key if you want the original type, although now that you have two holes, you could use the standard off-the-shelf M6 as sold in music stores. (These are the ones with the "D" gear cover, rather than a circle.)

Ok, cool that's good to know, and getting the other D type you mentioned will cover the original holes up well, whilst fitting exactly (I hope) the newer holes made by the locking version.

Now I just have to try and find them here in the UK. After a wee bit of searching I have found out that they are callled 'Schaller M6 Industry', with the 135 degree lug.

Thanks for your help John, much obliged that you have taken the time to engage in this thread.

My January 1991 JG 610 has Schallers on it...

I prefer the Kluson Style myself... But if you want it back to stock Schallers would be correct for it.

My 610 was originally Black Hardware... I have since replaced everything with White and Chrome Hardware.

Here are pics of how it looked originally

O_R_F, thanks for the info.

I've just spoken to a dealer here in the UK, who tells me they can specially order M6 minis with the 135 degree lug, which is great, as I can then mount them using the screwholes for the M6 locking tuners.

All good then, and this will cover the existing holes made by the original tuners, so if anyone else faces the same situation M6 minis with 135 degree lugs are possible.

Cheers
Scott
