John, thanks for your thoughts. I am disappointed to have acquired a Rick such as this, as my other three are absolutely magnificent - the oldest of which I bought new in 1990.

If anyone can help regarding heat treatment I'd be grateful, otherwise it'll be hanging on the wall for show.

Hanging it on the wall might be the best thing you could do for this. It's amazing what gravity and time can accomplish.

I'd be interested in how that works as well. Guess I'll try hanging my 4003 on the wall first, LOL!

Speaking of which, for those experienced at removing truss rods, would it be worth my effort to take out one of the truss rods and give it more of a bend in order to correct a slight underbow on one side of the neck that I just can't correct by adjusting the truss rods, or would I be wasting my time doing this?

I didn't fully appreciate the fact that although Rics are indeed beautiful instruments out of the factory, and have that unbelievable sound, they don't come totally set up the way one might expect.

It would be easy for us if, one, everyone wanted their instrument set up the same way and two, everyone lived in Southern California or an identical clime.

Peter Buck, for instance, has action so high and strings so heavy that I can hardly bear to play his guitars. But for him, that's his perfect adjustment. On the other hand, the lead player in my band likes his set up virtualy bottomed out, strings practically on the frets.

We hope we're going meet to "one's" expectation more often than not by sending them out with an average, middle-of-the-road adjustment but there's plenty of people at both ends of the spectrum too.

And then there's the climate; not much we can do about that.

What is the factory action height on a 4003 bass?

Maybe I missed the boat here about the NUT DRIVER to adjust the Truss Rods
having to be modified, ground down to fit behind the nut.
I too had to grind down the Nut Driver to fit behind the adjusting nut on my 2014 4004 Laredo and I also had to do the same thing for my 1987 4003.
So far from reading all the posts on this subject I haven't seen any response from the Factory about this situation with the Nut Driver or how they plan to correct this.
