Post subject:  Nut removal 660/12-Hammer from fret-side or slot direction?

Hi!
I've seen both ways in forums.
a) Hammering using a block from fret side
http://www.stewmac.com/freeinfo/Nuts,_s ... -5350.html
b) Tap it out slot-ways with a screwdriver
http://www.graphtech.com/fckeditor/user ... l_inst.pdf

Which way would be the right way to go with my 660/12?
Do you remember if it's sitting hard/is glued?
Any other tip I could use doing it?

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks!

Wow, those two links sure make it look complicated. What I do is just take a flathead screwdriver and and give it a nice firm tap with a hammer on the front, where the face of the nut meets the surface of the fretboard. It is super glued on, but the nut should come right off, no hassle.

Thanks for your reply Ben!
So why wouldn't you tap it from the side (as in b above),
seems more logical to me as there could follow some wood with the nut as it is glued
to the fretbord side of the slot.
Might happen if the glue joint is stronger then the wood itself.
To me it seems more likely to do so in the a) alternative.
Of course im no expert, that's why I'm asking :)

Nah, just give it a good tap. There'll be some glue residue, but nothing major.

Don't tap it from any of the sides of the neck - as this impact transmits the energy thru the neck and may cause the finish to hairline crack in the glue lines where the neck meets the body. The nut should be tapped gently in the direction from the fretboard towards the headstock - and do not pretend to cut a reedwood tree... one very light tap will do the trick.

Thanks Schmidt!
Had no idea that there could cause crack in the glue lines where the neck meets the body.
