Hi!

I think string hight at nut is to high on my 660/12.
Instead of filing down all 12 string sluts I'm thinking of
sanding/filing the nut at the bottom side.

I've done that on a saddle before using my eyes, with ok result,
but what method should I use to keep the bottom absolutely straight,
that would give perfect result every time.

Any suggestions?

Sandpaper facing up on a flat surface. Can't beat a chunk of granite for this.

What method should I use so it won't lean slightly, so the bottom
surface will be kept at exactly 90 deg to the sides of the nut?
I have done this by eye sanding down by hand in the past,
but that will never get perfect result,

there must be a better way - tool..?

You could put some vinyl electrical tape on the front and back of the nut to use as a cushion. Then mount the nut upside down in a vise as close to level with the jaws as possible, but just a little proud. Your steel jaws should then act as a very stable guide to keep you from sanding down too much.

Sorry for the vagueness of the "clearances" remark. In the pdf, the nut supplier suggests filing down the high and low slots to a certain clearance as a starting point in doing a set up so the strings will not buzz.

I read it as a measure you want to reach by sanding down the bottom of the nut.

NUT quite.

You want to leave a little more slack on the thick string and a little less on the thin one, measured between the string and the fret at the first and all other frets down the neck because the wound thick string will wobble much more when picked than the thin one, and needs more clearance under the fret so that buzz will not be a problem.

This is one case where equality is not a virtue. Refer to illustration 5.

when you've got the nut ground down as far as you want, scribble over the bottom with a pencil. Rub it one or two more times against the sandpaper. if there are no pencil marks left, the bottom is flat.
