The neck tone pot on my '76 4001 doesn't do anything. It appears to be at full treble, which is better that totally cut. For awhile it would work intermittently, not scratchy, it would either work or not. Is it possible that it's just a cold solder or bad wire? If so, which wires should I look at? Or.. is it more likely that the pot is bad?

If the pot's not wiping off any treble, the capacitor's doing nothing. Remove the scratchplate as carefully as possible and look for loose connections to the pot, particularly the solder joints connecting each leg of the capacitor to the terminals on the pot. If you spot anything loose, that's bound to be your problem, so re-solder where it belongs. Even if connections seem solid, a solder joint may have gone "dry", so if you see anything that looks at all dubious, it might pay to apply a soldering iron just long enough to melt the solder and let it set again. Beyond that, it would probably be an internal fault in the pot, most easily handled by replacing the pot.

It must have "gone dry", as described. All looked good but I heated everything up and added just a little more solder, for good luck, and all is good. Thanks.
