The bridge in my 4001 can be rocked back and forth (along the axis of the strings) fairly easily even with the strings on.
Is this meant to happen?
If it is then is there any preference to it being rocked closer to the mute or towards the tailpiece?

2nd question - on the G string I was adjusting the screw for the intonation. The screw was a bit tight so I carefully applied some light oil, but when I got the screw to turn it came out of the bridge completely... as if I have stripped the threads in the bridge.
If I have stripped the threads can this be fixed, or is it time for a new bridge?
New parts are not easy to get here in NZ

The string tension should hold the bridge in place if you have enough break angle. If it "rocks back" enough to happen every time you need to tune, etc., that's too much. Ideally it should only even come up when you change strings so you can "set and forget" about it. There is no preference about forward or back other than: 1) either way, the intonation changes, and only one way will be right depending on your setup; 2) rocked "forward" (upright) probably gives you a better string witness point and break angle.

If the bolt is sheared then I guess you have a big problem. Otherwise, if it just came out a healthy-looking bolt, you just need to reassemble it... spring goes over the bolt shaft as it enters the saddle base so the bolt can drive the saddle forward or back by passing through the threads. If the saddle wasn't giving you enough travel before you can flip it around if you have to.
