I'm re-fretting this---> viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16020 but I want a higher fret-wire than standard (if possible). So, I'm thinking that medium fret-wire is probably best but I want one with more height.

Is there something out there? Is it even possible to re-fret using a larger fret-wire?

I can't start the job until I know which fret-wire I can get away with...

I think that the number of people who do what you are planning to do are few.... The first resource for info that comes to my mind is Warmoth. Here's a search page that lists references to frets, particularly the first search result. Study this page alone and you will know a lot about frets. Based on what you describe, I would seriously look at the 6105 fret size. Additionally, if you're a heavy player of this guitar, you might want to consider getting stainless steel frets.

I quickly entered another search parameter, re: fret size and Ricks:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=warmoth+fret+ ... er+guitars

Take a little time reading through the results of these two searches and I think you will know what to do. Obviously you are replacing your frets to satisfy a personal preference, so there's not much anyone else can specifically recommend. I imagine that most fret jobs, especially on better guitars, are done to repair (partial re-fret) or refurbish/replace all the frets on a well-played, favored guitar and keeping it that way. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks! It's a good friends guitar bequeathed to him by a recently passed uncle. As part of the inheritance, it was requested that the new owner get the guitar back to original spec' but with modern parts. It needs a re-fret plus new everything! I have all the parts save the fret-wire but I have ordered some from Jescar. I went for NS medium/highest but may also get a medium/high and will choose between the 2.

Thanks for the links = I will check them out and see which I may also buy. It's no big deal having 2 lots = I can always use the other some other time...

[edit] The 6105 you mentioned seems ideal [2.29mm x 1.14mm] Thanks :D

Assuming the friend will be playing this guitar, you might want to get him involved before seating the new frets -- show him your samples, etc. It's always good to have someone to share the blame if it does not go well....

Second thought on the stainless steel frets: LOTS of work, since they are a much harder material. You might regret it halfway through.... Stay with the standard frets.

Have you been to this web site (Rickresource)? That crowd may be more inclined to make suggestions regarding modifications:

Search the site, at least, for past discussions about fret size.

The owner has left the the renovation completely in my hands. He's a close friend but lives in another county (state). I do not buy stainless frets = the types I have bought are nickel silver from Jescar. Thanks for the heads-up on rickresource (I applied for an account 2 days ago and am waiting to be accepted)...
