Hey guys, I've got a 4003 and it came with roundwounds. I'd like to change to Flatwound. Can anyone suggest a good Flatwound?

Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats JF344. Lowest tension on the planet, last forever, and sound and feel remarkably like the original 60s and 70's Maxima sets Rickenbacker used. Not cheap (I get mine for $68-72 per set) but may be the last set you buy for a long long time. I have them on two of my four 4001's and on 12 other basses. :-)

I really like the TI JF344 set as well. Great strings!

Here's another pile-on for TI Jazz Flats. 8-)

The Optima flats are supposedly the "successor" to the Maxima flats that were OEM many moons ago. And La Bella now has a "low tension" set steel flat that is designed to compete head-on with the T-I nickel wrap. Both have good reputations.

Actually the new Maximas are similar in name only. Different feel, tension and sound. I found it interesting that Mr. Hall recommended the TI's too... ;-)

I had Fender 9050's on my 4003 for a time. They sounded great! I still have that set but on a different bass right now. Lots of low end that flats are famous for, but still had some of the growl that comes from rounds. Best of both worlds. That's the only flats I've tried however
on a Ric.
