Hi, apologies if this topic has been covered before, but I can't seem to find the info I'm after. I was just wondering, what is the average string height of a standard 4003? and also, would having the action higher than this cause damage over time due to higher string tension?
Cheers! BOB

I really hate to put numbers on adjustment because it's such a matter of personal preference. However . . .
Starting with a dead straight neck, at the 12th fret, as a starting the strings should 2.4 mm off the fret top on the bass side and 1.6 mm on the treble side.
Add relief if you absolutely must and adjust the height to your preference.
The high action won't damage your bass- just make it harder to play.

Thanks very much for the advice... this is a little strange. Since I bought my 4003 a few weeks ago, I've been fiddling with the action, but found it was either to low to the frets or a bit too high. Found a nigh on perfect action today... Just checked the measurements that Mr. Hall suggested and my strings are EXACTLY at that height! Kinda creepy lol.
Cheers! BOB

Well, he IS the CEO of the company that made your bass! Who else would know better?

different players have different preferences and different playing styles and different strings and no 2 bass necks are identical ...
my advice is get the action as low as you can without getting unpleasant fret buzz ...
I find most Ric necks flatten out better than other brands so you can get the action pretty low ...

Could the intonation be affected by adjusting the string height?
I'd like to get my action a bit lower.
Thanks!

Sure it can. If you raise the bridge, effectively you are changing the point at which each fret hits the true note, so yes, the intonation will need to be re-calibrated as well.

Hi,
I use to have the action set as low as possible on my 4003 for easy playability. Now I have 4,5 mm (G-string 12th fret) and 6 mm (E-string 12th fret)
I think the sound is better with a higher action due to increased string tension. More growl, and I like the response I get from the strings.

Trackson Ilike and keep a very low action on all my axes.always prefured a fast action. I dont want to have to wrestle my axe just to play a note. I still get plenty of sustain if i need it and plenty of growl.as far as sound that all lies in your rig and what you use with it, experiment with equalizers, tone, treble, bass, midrange, processors, preamps, amp simulators, etc.
