I’ve been trying to straighten my bass neck. It has too much space between the 9th fret and the strings. So, I’ve been turning it counterclockwise, a bit each day.

It has improved, but the nuts are now turning on their own, which do not let the truss rods move any further.

Any ideas?

Take a look at the RIC owner’s manual. The link to it is located above under the “Service” tab. If I’m reading you right, I think you need to turn the truss rods nuts clockwise.... But take a look at the manual.

If the relief has improved that is purely coincidental. The flatten the neck out more than it currently is you have to tighten the rods by turning the nuts clockwise as viewed from the end of the headstock.

The motto goes: "rightly tightly, lefty loosy" or something to that effect.

Just to clarify. The truss rods are used to get rid of curvature of the neck. If the neck is bowed it will make the action appear higher. Press on the E string on the 1st fret & the 16th fret. If there is space between the string & the frets you use the truss rods to straighten the neck & eliminate the space. If the E string is touching the frets the entire length or a slight space, your problem is elsewhere. You would then try lowering the bridge. If the bridge is as low as it goes, then your going to need to take it to someone who knows what their doing. It's possible to file the bridge saddles lower. If you feel comfortable messing with that there are tutorials. Check the curvature 1st. Then bridge height. Good luck.
