Hiya,

A friend suggested I use DW-40 when I wipe the neck as part of my usual ricky maintenance. Any thoughts on the matter? would that be safe in terms of the wood etc.?

Cheers,

Nononono!

WD-40 is basically kerosene with a few additives, including DMSO. The DMSO can attack and soften the finish on your instrument, and the kerosense will leave a smelly film for a while.

Howdy,

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! WD-40 has corrosives in it that will destroy the finish not to mention the smell. What I do is simply to use a cloth diaper made from cotton (You can purchase them at any Wal-Mart, etc) and simply wipe the neck and strings with it. That works for me.

Thanks guys. I make sure to wipe the neck after every session and works just fine so far. I had a feeling that using something 'mechanical' as WD-40 may cause more damage than good.

I use Dr. Stringfellows citrus polish as someone in this forum suggested.Works great and doesn't hurt the finish. Use it in the neck and the strings.

Im not sure who your question was ased to Mr Hall, I play at home and do a few gigs with a couple of my fellow firefighters, but i always wipe my basses down with a soft cloth diaper after i play them , strings to to get the salt and skin that comes off the hands . plus buff them with a cloth diaper after waxing them , i have been told im (you said bad word) about it, and rightly so, lol

This WD 40 thing, scares the bejabbers out of me!

Good Lord!

Between that and taking a Black and Decker out to drill up a new pristine 325C58 to "do a Bigsby"

And they say post-mortems are hard to watch!
