i recently read a thread on how you could take some vice grips and pull the pickup post up to adjust their height. is this realy safe?

Yes, but... Some older pups had the winding wire around those button nails so you could damage the winding. Newer with full bobbins, yes you can lift them. They will scar, just be careful, and use a black felt marker to re-black them. It is better though a lot more involved to push them up from behind. That involves removing the magnet. Oh, and they twist in/out.

thank you for the info. i may try this during the next string change. there does seem to be a difference in volume on the g&e strings.

Keep in mind that this could void your warranty, I know Mr. Hall in the past has said that you should never tamper with the pole pieces on the pickups.
In your manuel on set up it specifically says not to tamper with the pole pieces on the pickups, it says it could possibly damage, and I'm reading that right out of my manuel that I recieved with my 4003.
You should contact customer service at Rickenbacker before you attempt to do anything otherwise you might regret it later if you end up damaging your pickups.
