I am playing a 4003 bass. It has a bridge that has built in foam mutes. Even though I think these are very cool I don't have a use for them most of the time. I would like to replace the bridge with a different bridge that I will allow me to palm mute. The current bridge does not allow this. What bridges should I consider? Will this make a big difference in tone? Kind of low on funds so please keep that in mind.

One modification I've done on the stock tailpiece when I've converted them to 5-strings is to cut the area above the string mute out, replicating the stock 4003/5 tailpiece. You can do this on yours and it will open the area up for palm muting. I leave the mute in since complete removal will also leave two open screw holes adjacent to the mute. I used a Dremmel with a cutting disc and various files to smooth it out. Re-chroming isn't neccesary afterwards but I have it done to improve appearence.

I do the same modifications to my basses ... mechanical mutes don't do it for me ... also Dipshot makes an aftermarket bridge that allows palm muting ...

Is this the one that allows for palm muting? That could be really awesome but I can't tell in the pic.

yep ... that is the one ... they come in chrome and black I think ... they sell on ebay for less than the price listed on that web site ... some people say the additional mass improves tone as well ...

The Dipshot is supposed to be a real good alternative, and can be switched out with no modifications.

However John Hall has mentioned that he has a new design in the works. Hopefully its one of the "surprises" that we may see in the next few weeks.

I have no intentions of replacing the bridges of any of my Rick basses, but if I was going to, I'd wait to see the new RIC bridge design. Te new design might even make me change my mind about replacement.
