I have a 60's ear Rickenbacker Lap Steel that has a weak horseshoe pickup. I have been told this is common with older pickups. I read a post on the forum about re-gaussing the pole pieces to fix. Anyone have any other information?

The Horseshoes can be removed and remagnatized. Since you are in So.Calif. I suggest you contact the Rick Factory, ask for Kenny Howes. He can probably direct you to someone locally who does this for them on the slug magnets. The only set back is that sometimes they will not hold a recharge, but you can add a bar magnet to the bottom side which will make it work.
