Is there a way to correct the neck angle on an old (pre-'86) 4001? when the neck itself is straight, almost no relief, and the bridge is all the way down. If it were a bolt-on I'd add a shim, but what can be done with a neck-thru? Thanks!

As a starting point, try adjust the neck dead straight- that's the factory spec. After you do that, let's see where the bridge is.

Thanks Mr Hall. The neck is as straight as I can get it to be... dead straight on the treble side, and a very very slight relief (almost unnoticeable) on the bass side. The action is not high, it's medium-low, but my Shadow almost plays itself and I'd like a slightly lower action on this one too.
