Hi all,

I have a brand new 650C I got about six months ago. I noticed that new B and G strings sound quite dead for some reason. They don't ring at all. I've checked to see if something is holding or touching them in any way, but nothing. It looks ok from the bridge all the way up to the nut. I tried putting another 'new' string just to see if the new one I had before was a bit old but it had no effect. I've used D'Addario's 13 and 17.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong before I simply take it to the shop?

Try cleaning the nut slots and bridge saddles, and also check your turss rod adjustment.

There are a few things that you can do. If the strings are dead in the open position (not fretted), it is probably a nut adjustment. One thing that you can do is to place some (Just a very small amount) shaved pencil lead (320 Grit sandpaper works best on a #2 pencil) into the nut slot. DO NOT ALTER THE NUT IN ANY WAY! If the nut does need additional work, take the Ric to someone who is qualified to do this work and is familiar with RIC's.
If the string is dead when fretted, it is possible that the replacement string may again have to be changed. Also, the neck on your RIC should be perfectly straight. I hope that this helps.
