Post subject:  4003- .047 Cap mod ?

Hello, this is my 2nd post here at the Rick Forum, I thank you for answering my last question, this one has to do with the "by-pass" cap mod, when I opened up the cavity, I noticed that there were only two caps installed and both read, .047 MFD. One of the caps is wired >>tone control pot to toggle switch, [bridge pickup] ***Is this the correct one? FYI - the bass is an early 1980 4003 model with the "split" guard. thanks in advance, looking forward to hearing from you guys. PS: I thought that this cap should have read .0047 MFD ?

Sounds like the .0047 capacitor has been removed from the wiring harness on your 4003.

Yeah, what crazyrick said.

The two .047 caps that are there are for the tone controls.

You can add the cap back in though. For just adding the cap back in, replace the wire from the switch to the treble volume pot with the .0047uF cap. Or do the full switch mod. The following pic should help:

thanks for the information, very good to know that part of the situation. I have another question so please bear with me. Both of the .0047 caps were removed, >>would this be the reason that both tone pots are not working, I cannot roll-off or boost the frequency of the neck or treble pickups. [???] thanks again

I am currently adding the new harness with the tone selector to my 1980 4001. originally was just going to replace the pick up selector switch and the ric-osound and mono jacks, the original ones are 26yrs old and make noise ans I use this bas to record with so I want it clean, the harness I decided so to get the modern and the vintage with my 4001, will see how it goes, I could always have the original harness reinstalled should I choose, so although I prefer the vintage tone just thought in case I would like the modern tone its there at the click of the knob, I use flats on my 4001 and ric, rounds on my 4003, so now I with have the tone option on both axes.

There's never been more than one .0047 mFd capacitor. I think you're referring to the .047 mFd caps used on the tone controls which should never be touched if you want working tone controls.

JH has it. You can still follow the pics I refered you to and add the .047uF caps that go to the tone pots back in. They are also available from the Boutique.
