I have an early 90's 1997 RI that seems to "fart out" on the neck pickup. I was wondering if I might have adjusted the neck pickup too close to the strings. I moved the pickup closer for more output. Would I be better off lowering it for cleaner sound and live with less output? Any input would be appriciated. thanks

Yeah, try lowering it. When a pickup is set too close to the strings, all sorts of odd overtones and noises can occur. It can also make intonating and tuning your guitar a hassle.

I've found that the tonal benefits of lowering your pickups far outweigh the loss in output you might experience, anyway. I had this epiphany several months ago and adjusted all my pickups downward and everything just opened up. A lot more of the guitars natural nuances seem to come out better, and the strings aren't being choked by the magnets sitting right underneath them. And turning your amp up a notch to compensate isn't a big deal.

Why are you trying for more output from your pickups, anyway?

Howdy,

Very good question. Just my opinion here....I just feel that pickups should be set for optimal tone...not output. As far as output is concerned, that what the amp is for.
