Hello-

This is my first posting. There seems to be a lot of useful information here and helpful, knowledgable techs, and it's amazing to see posts from RIC employees/CEOs. (You won't find that on any other company's forum!)

I checked the setup and technical archives and didn't find exactly what I was looking for, but forgive me if this has been answered already...

I own a midnight blue 2006 620 AND jetglo 2006 330, both of which I am *very* happy with. I had my local dealer set up both guitars when purchased (new strings, action and intonation, etc). The 620 has ultra-low action, plays like a dream and is buzz-free. The 330 plays nicely, but is slightly buzzy on the E, A and D strings in most fret positions.

Both guitars appear to have straight necks, with the truss rod appearing to keep both necks essentially dead straight, though I am used to more relief/bow on other guitars (Telecaster and Epiphone Casino, etc).

Are these necks different shapes? In other words, is it possible to get my 330 setup to play identically (or close to it) to my 620? Could this be a difference in the depth of the grooves in the 330 nut? Perhaps the 330 nut has *slightly* deeper grooves, thus slightly lower string position causing the mild buzzing?

Because of the perfect setup of the 620, I find myself reaching for it first...

Thanks much!

Howdy,

Welcome to the forum. To answer your question on the 330, there are 2 possible solutions. First is to check the neck with a ruler because it may be very slightly back bowed on the bass side. If it is, simple loosten the bass side truss rod in small increments (1 hour at a time or 1/12 turn). If the neck is perfectly straight and the buzzing persists, then again at slight increments raise the action by adjusting the bridge on the bass side. The difference will almost not be noticeable and the buzzing should disappear. Good luck and let us know what happens. Just my opinion here. There are also 2 others that regularly post here that can be helpful. They are Dale Fortune and Paul W. who goes by the name Jingle-Jangle. Both are luthiers that are very highly respected by everyone here and the folks at RIC.

Steve

It is possible that the nut has slightly deeper slots on the 330 causing the buzzing. If this is not the cause, the buzzing could be corrected by a fret redress and / or leveling without having to raise the action.

Thanks to you both for your time. I resolved the setup with a slight tweak of the bass side truss rod (*very* slight) and a little lift on the bridge. Perfect!

All other things being equal (which they pretty much are with a 330 and a 620... scale length, fingerboard radius etc), you will never be able to get quite as low an action on a semi-hollow guitar as a solidbody, because the body vibration is greater on a semi-hollow, and the bridge also vibrates up and down with it - so if you set the action as low as the lowest you can get on a solidbody, the strings will rattle slightly on the frets as the bridge moves towards the bottom of its travel.

It won't be a huge difference though, as it sounds like you've found. You'll probably find that the 330 sounds better with a slightly higher action too - the effect of fret rattle is noticeable before you actually hear definite rattling, it makes the tone a bit thinner and brasher.
