Indeed, I think Mr. Hall once stated that something like 90-95% of all strings are re-packaged.

That makes it easy: just take off the 8 and keep it for the octave high g on your 12, move everything over one string, and buy a 50 (49 for D'addario users) for low E.

Yes, JH has been saying this way back since (even before?)the RIC FAQ days.

Here's someone else saying it too:

If you'd like to see how strings are made, D'Addario has some nice videos here:

An error in publication that was corrected a long time ago.

The latest version of the manual (now at revison D) is always here:

You're absolutely correct. RIC strings are made by another company for them.
It's really important to emphasize that they're made to our specifications. As it happens, our supplier does not offer the very specialized string sets we spec in their own product line; we're the only place you can get them.

And don't try to emulate the set by just purchasing singles off the shelf. As with any well made proprietary item, I'm sure the strings have different core/wrap ratios, finishing process, etc., that make them tailored to Ricks and RIC pickups. You know, the stuff exclusive contracts and trade secrets are made of!

Hey -- glad to see someone else who uses 11's with a wound 3rd! Much better than 10's. More consistent top to bottom, and more mass means more natural sustain.

hey again, what gauge is the wound third your using, i can only seem to find a wound 20?

For roundwound 11's, I use D'addario XL set EXL115W:
11 - 14 - 21w - 28w - 38w - 49w

For flatwound 11's, I use Gibson flats:
11 - 15 - 21w - 28w - 37w - 51w

But to make the flats feel similar tension-wise, I usually change out the 15 for a 14 plain on the B string and change out the 51w for a 50 w on the low E string. Also, because there are no "gaps" internally in the flatwound windings, there is more metal, which means more tension, which means about a quarter turn of the truss rod nut, so I don't change out between flats and rounds that often. Actually, more and more I've been sticking with the flats and using the rounds less and less, usually on a couple of other guitars, because the flats do have such good tone and sustain, and still punch when I want them to.
