I need to change the octave G string on my 370/12 from the standard .010 to .009 so it will hopefully stop snapping. My question is, what brand and model of string should I buy to most closely match the rest, which are the RIC branded 12 string set. Thanks.

I would say whatever brand os single strings your local music retailer sell. From my experience, many retailers carry D'Addario singles, and they work well.

Most plain steel strings are pretty much identical to each other. In fact, different brands could be made by the same manufacturer.

I just bought bulk 12 packs of .010, .012, .013, .016 plain steels from JustStrings. This will extend the life of my Ric 12 string, Ric short scale and my acoustic string sets as I crap up my plain steels long before the wound strings. At $3 a pack of 12, it is a great solution!

Howdy,

For the octave G string I usually use a D'addario .009 and they work quite well. Sometimes I'll use a .008 if it is available. I try not to use .010's as they will snap more often.

And if that's not enough variety, D'addario also makes an 8 1/2 and a 9 1/2 as well.

I didn't know about those. I'll have to try the 8½ sometime.

Where is the string snapping? Is it at the bridge or tuner capstan? Sometimes sharp edges on either cause or assist in string failure.
I have used .008s in my two acoustics (Washburn and Guild) as well as both Ric 12s for years with little trouble. D'Addario makes a decent set of lt gauge strings. Always get spares just in case.
