I have a 330 made in 1979. The bridge pickup has lost a significant amount of its output. A friend of mine said it might be a short on the coil. When I tap the pole pieces with a screwdriver whilst hooked up to an amp, only the third string pole piece returns a click as loud as the neck pickup poles.

Can anyone help with a diagnosis?

Measure the coil resistance (with one lead disconnected from the circuit) using an ohmmeter. If it reads less than approx. 7K ohms, it's shorted and needs to be rewound.

Is there an advantage to rewinding over replacement? And if there is, who can undertake a rewind in the UK?

Be careful rewinding, as it is easy to crack the magnet on the bottom in two. This happened to me, and the guy who "rewound" the pickup would not refund my money as the pickup was ruined.
