Hi,
I'm restringing a friends 1974 4001, but found the is play on each tuning peg as you tune them.

Is this normal as I had the same on my 1973 4001, or do they need replacing?
Cheers.

Assuming your '74 has open-backed Klusons or Schallers, and not closed-back Grovers (which it should, but I have seen some Grover carry-overs into '74), are the gear retaining screws nice and tight? They work loose over time and this can cause some slippage.

They're definatley not closed back Grovers, they're open back one but not sure which type they are.

I've stripped them down and found that the cog-wheel has a bit of play on each one of them, but since i put them back together they're better.
