Great shot of TP's Rose Morris 330/6

Why is the pick guard signed?

I believe it was a limited edition 1997 TP signature made in the late '80s...

But…the TP was/is a 660/12 yes?
Maybe he just swapped a pickguard with one that has his name on it so the other guys would know who's guitar it was and they wouldn't play it and get it all gunky and stuff. Scott Thurston -never- washes his hands. A bad habit he picked up back playing with Iggy.

Petty had at least one model 1997 reissue that Rickenbacker presented to him. The pickguard was inscribed with something like, "Many Thanks, Tom, From Rickenbacker." (I'm trying to quote from memory here--the guitar is shown in the color photos of Richard Smith's Rickenbacker book.) That guitar had a Fire Glo finish, like this one, but the pickguard and TRC were white. I wonder if he decided to change the white trim for gold? He's been pictured with this Fire Glo/gold guitar for several years now.

I think he also had the Fireglo with the white Pick guard too (He also had the RM 1993)

Anyway, I think he just took a sharpie and signed it!

I remember seeing this 1997 on Sound stage concert. I love the gold!

It looks like the guitar body is at least 1" 3/4 thick

The Rickenbacker model 1997 (with a white nameplate and pickguard) was reissued in 1987. The guitars were available with the choice of an Accent Vibrato or an "R" tailpiece. Tom Petty was presented with "Reissue production unit number one" from RIC. I've seen the gold "Tom Petty" signature pickguard (just like the one on the 1997 photograph in the first post) on one of Tom's 12-string guitars too.

That is cool. I wonder if he plays his MG 360/12 anymore.

I think that the Pete Townshend reissue had the "R" tailpiece. I'm pretty sure that the 1997 reissue was offered with either a reproduction of the Ac'cent or a trapeze tailpiece. The available colors were Fire Glo, Jet Glo, and Maple Glo.

There's a short video on YouTube of Alan Rogan explaining how Tom's Model 1993/12 is his favorite twelve string now. I sure wish Rickenbacker would reissue them! They're beautiful guitars!

Yes, in the 90's, model 1997 was available with an Accent Vibrato or a trapeze tailpiece. When the model was first reissued in 1987, it was available with either the Accent or "R" tailpiece. Here's a quote from a RIC promotional piece about the Fireglo finish on the 1987 reissue of model 1997:

"The Fireglo finish was painstakingly replicated to be identical to those units leaving the factory during the 60's; dozens of vintage instruments from owners and Rickenbacker's museum were compared in this effort to assure authenticity."

Yep - played it last night in San Diego. I think he brought the MG 12 out for the encore. Lots of Rics in the show last night!
