I was only 9 or 10 when I first heard this, it's almost a catch cry for my generation

Born to be Wild, Yes! But I feel some domestication has set in after another almost 4 decades! I still really enjoyed the song though degradation is creeping in my backdoor, I've still got some life in me yet ! Rock on rebels with Ric's!

I remember in Australia at just about this time guys started growing their hair, slowly at first but in the mid 70's most guys had long hair! It really became somewhat excepted seen as cool rather than rebellious. I went to a private catholic school and most of us had hair well over our shoulders, half way down my back was mine, although only 15 I had been playing guitar for 8 years. I was well behaved and did heaps of charity music for the school, not once was I told to get a haircut!
In the end some of the younger lay teachers at our school had long hair! They were cool too! I think my mother used to cut my hair when I was asleep, she would only take 2 or 3 inches off,,,,It didn't bother me I still had plenty more and when your young it grows back really fast!

jbudweiser I guess we kinda cleared a path where the hair thing was not frowned on as much. I wish I had the energy now I had then, that was beaten out of me by cowboys. In Texas cowboys prevailed and they didn't like long hair. Schools here still have hair codes. I was a dropout, my senior year. We were going to be famous and didn't need education, (Pink Floyd).
I was pretty smart until I got my draft notice. I already had lost two friends in Nam. I couldn't run to Canada or Mexico, not enough money. My best chance was to join and take a test so I could get a job over there that was a little safer. I had two years of electronics in school and had helped my brother, an electrician, so I passed that test and chose to be a Teletype operator. The Army name was 72B20, Communication Center Specialist. Enlistment made you theirs for three years as opposed to two if you were drafted. It truly did change many ideas I had, the service mainly taught me diplomacy. I was prejudice before and came out knowing that we could all get along. A black man was just as good to watch my back as a white man and I would have killed to protect him. I had an African American friend named Buba, is that not a coincidence. He came from the worst neighborhood in St. Louis. There were tears in his eyes the breakfast when he realized they fed us three meals a day. He was a great young man, much better than I was, inside.

Thanks for your insight and your personal experiences THC. Glad to hear you got home safe and Buba got feed better and got home safe too! Your generation were the ones that paved the way, but you got some backlash. I'm a big believer in equality and peace
Both those things are not easy to gain or keep. Thanks for the blast from the past music, and all the vintage Ric's and insight. The Music says it all!

I think once the establishment starts doing it, it ain't cool anymore lol.

That's why in the late 70's 'we got our 'air cut!', and threw out the flares.

And when people like Zeppelin and Kiss conformed and cut their hair shorter, they lost a hundred points on the cool meter.
