I was doing an online search for an Ampeg micro bass amp and stumbled upon this pic of a guy and his Ric bass.
A 4000 body for sure but the pickguard looks similar in shape to a 3001 and it has a P-bass pickup.

Any ideas?

It's a very modified 4000. You can see in this video, that even the back of the neck has been modified with position markers.

Thanks for posting the video, got a real chance to see the bass properly.

Think the guy on the geet could do with a bit more practice though!

 Yes he needs to get up to speed with his Paganini!

Seriously, good musicians and sound with good instruments, the bass sounds awesome.

Begs the question "Why?"

Because he can? Because it's his property?

I can't say why for the bassist in the video. For myself, I think it's a cool idea, because as I get older, it's getting harder for me to see little dot markers on the side of the fingerboard on stage when the lights are either dim or very bright.
Just a guess, but I'd say that for the speed that bassist plays, he wants accuracy with very distinct markings.

The back of the neck position markers would look cooler on a jetglo bass.
