Anyone know what guitar Michael Monarch played in those old Steppenwolf videos? Look in the Born To Be Wild video (I think it's an Ed Sullivan performance) and also there's another Ed Sullivan performance where they do a "Born To Be Wild/Magic Carpet Ride" medley. He plays the same guitar in both.
It appears to be similar to the 600 series, but instead of an upper wing, it's more like a Telecaster, Les Paul, or more accurately, a Gretsch Super Axe. In fact, I think my avatar is that precise guitar, but I'm not sure. Thanks for your help!

I saw some color footage of them on Playboy After Dark once where he was using a '50s Combo 800 or something. I remember thinking how weird it was because it was a reallly dark burst.

Come to find out, it was on loan from The Rickenbacker Collection, and is across the hall from my office. Who knew.

Saw a pic of a Combo 600 and it looks right! Wow, was beginning to think I was seeing things ...
Now, if can just find one ...

I'm sure that your subscription to that channel was purely for the musical programming...

I've got a Steppenwolf photo album from a concert tour in 1969 and one of the photographs of John Kay features the caption, "John Flies Rickenbacker Guitar." Plug in your Rick and get ready for takeoff!

It was a Combo 800. I e-mailed him about it once... he thought it was a "prototype" of some sort.

Hi

I see that this is an old thread, but just joined the forum.

You tube has a lot of the videos, and on the Ed Sullivan one it shows clearly the 50's Rick that was mentioned above.

But...

On one other video, it shows him playing a Fender Esquire.

Videos aside, it does sound like a Rick on the recording; does anyone know for sure what it was recorded with?

Unless his memory is faulty (which I doubt; he seemed pretty clear to me) he told me he used Fender guitars on the recordings.
