I bought it because I like the Smithereens vocal sound and its a nice album. Nothing earthshaking. Just a nice set of covers. I'd like to see them try a few more of the Beatles energy tunes.

I also buy a lot of Who covers. I get a kick out of people trying obscure tunes like "Mary Ann with the Shaky Hands" (The Greeenhornes) and "Heinz Beans" (Doleful Lions).

But a RIC freak friend turned me on to The Smithereens years ago and its good to hear them recording again.

MMM

Credit goes to the Smithereens. Recording the exact songs as they appeared on "The First Album by England's Phenomenal Pop Combo" released by Capitol Records in 1964 illustrates the "Reens" respect and admiration for The Beatles plus their dedication to pay tribute with the "Smithereens treatment" to a landmark Beatles album.

Each listener can determine their own enjoyment level of "Meet The Smithereens!" and I salute "America's Phenomenal Pop Combo" for recording an album with the same spirit and fun that was present all those years ago.

I can't recall which CD it's on, but The Smithereens do a really good cover of "The Seeker".

The Smithereens are a great original band that has apparantly run out of original material.Take it for what it's worth.

Not true. The band is said to be working on a new album of originals, and Pat has put out some solo efforts in recent years.

Yep, and Jim Babjak's side group "Buzzed Meg" has a few albums out too. It's not a case of "running out of original material". These guys actually adore the Beatles that much. Take it for what it's worth....

I'm not slamming the group. But 13 years is a long time to go without an album. The solo material can't compare to their group efforts.

Got this about a year ago. Love it! Especially the liner notes. I didn't know it was the first time an album (Meet the Beatles) ever out-sold a single!

Well, this is the closest I found to a Smithereens thread.

Here you are:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNZbP3ZVem4

A lot of Ric glory going on with this band.
