Does anyone know what the rationale was for replacing the old-style 360 with the rounded body new-style 360 back in 1964? Was it strictly style-related, or was there a perceived difference (or improvement) in sound?

It seems from many posts on the subject that many users prefer the 360OS sound and/or appearance versus the 360NS. I recall reading a post from John Hall on this forum where he said the 330 had a more acoustic sound than the 360 (presumably NS) due to having about 15% more internal volume. I presume that would also hold true for the 360OS (c63) vs. NS as well, since it is basically the same body style as the 330. Although, the 360OS did have the internal X-bracing which I presume neither the 330 or 360NS have.

When I recently bought my 330/12, I compared it with a 360/12 and 370/12, both new-style. It seemed to me the 330/12 had a slight but noticeably brighter and more ringing tone than the other two. I have seen numerous similar comments on this forum and YouTube regarding the 360/12OS vs. NS. If so, why was there a change?

I think it was mostly a cosmetic and sales standpoint, a new model with a rounded shape for comfortable playing, which also looked good with binding and inlays. It was good timing as the 360/12 became a very popular guitar in the mid-'60s. They're pretty much the same soundwise, but I've come to believe the 330 style has just a bit more ring to it.

I'm waiting for them to come out with the 360/12 NS with the wider neck.
I'll probably be too old and senile play then, but hey, you never know!! :o  :?

If you want a wider fretboard, buy a 1993Plus or 660. That gives you a choice of hollow-body, or solid-body.

There is also a school of thought that the 8-) Double Bound 360 OS or WB models sound better than 330 or 360NS bodies, just because one tends to play better when your guitar is cooler looking. 8-) Its a theory .... :) :)

I think that theory is absolutely right! In fact, I think it's so right that it's not just a theory anymore ... it's a truism!
