Thanks for the recent update, even though it's not good news.
Some really good instruments stolen they knew what they wanted, one person cannot walk away with that haul. You need at least two. Let's hope they get back all their tools of trade.

It's impossible to know, if a band can just replace or have other instruments at hand to start playing.

I'm sure Tom and the boys aren't hurting for guitars, but it's sad all the same.

I always wonder what happens to stolen instruments.

Yes I'm sure Tom would have a good collection to draw on in reserve.
Where it would really hurt if you where a smaller band on an overseas tour or gig
that would really put a spanner in the works if you got ripped off.

I was at a gig and we had finish our set but there was some commotion going on during the next acts first song, the cops turned up! Apparently the guitarist in the other band was in possession of a stolen guitar, the true owner was in the audience that evening and spotted his beloved guitar so he called them. The cops let the band finish the song but questioned the guy playing the stolen guitar straight after. He had just purchased a day prior it and was unaware it was stolen, he had receipt from the pawn broker. The true owner was handed the guitar on the spot!

That theft was solved within a day, not all stolen guitar incidents get that result at that speed!

Funny thing many of the venues I've gigged become a crime scene  ;)

I feel for the guy who bought it. I hope he went back to the pawn shop and got restitution.

It's interesting that Tom Petty and other artists bring their prized vintage instruments on the road, but they're not given their own security team. Peter Buck learned the hard way, and had someone keep an eye on his Rickenbacker for the rest of the tour. Many artists won't bother taking their valuable guitars, and they'll have the companies or luthiers make them copies (Which Rickenbacker did for Peter Buck, yet he still had the original on the road).

The guy got his money back you bet, the pawn broken would have been obligated as the police knew it was stolen property that he had sold. I'm not sure if the thief was tracked down

Rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are offering a £48,000 ($75,0000 reward for the return of five guitars stolen from a Los Angeles-area studio last week, ahead of their U.S. and Europe tour, which includes concerts in London (June) and the Isle Of Wight

The band said on their website that the guitars include Petty's 1967 12-string blonde Rickenbacker 360 and his 1965 Gibson SGTV Junior, as well as instruments belonging to bassist Ron Blair, rhythm guitar player Scott Thurston, and lead guitarist Mike Campbell.

They said they would pay a $75,000 reward "with no questions asked to anyone with information leading to the recovery of the guitars."

The guitars were reported stolen on Thursday from a studio in Culver City, west of Los Angeles, where the band was rehearsing for their U.S. tour, which is set to open in Broomfield, Colorado, on Wednesday.

Police said they were investigating the theft

Poor Tom.....down to his last dozen or so Rickenbackers.Might have to ebay my Albert Hall tickets unless these are found.

Someone from TMZ called me this morning at work to ask me about the stolen '67 360/12 and the new ones that we made for him. I had to point out that 1993 and 1998 were not the years they were made, but the actual model numbers!

Breaking news...the guitars have been found and an arrest has been made.Apparently the perpetrator is a private security guard arrested after trying to sell one of the guitars at a Hollywood pawn shop.Incredible.
