Strange... I have no problems inducing growl from my cap-modded '77 4001 with Chromes. God, I love those strings!

Do you mean the cap is there or you took it out?

I am appreciating the Chromes tone all the more I play them. And I liked them even as I tuned them up.

Cap's gone. True, she doesn't growl like she did with rounds, and the Chromes are mellowing some, but with those strings it's all in the fingers.

Funny, but with the cap out I switch the neck p/u for a touch LESS bottom...

OK, Wints and johnallg, I finally did it and bought the D'Addario Chromes (warm/mellow flat wounds) today and just installed them.

I agree with all of your comments, johnallg. The Fenders that I removed sound *very* flatwound, but these D'Addario strings definitely have a roundwound character, especially with my felt pick and the attack sound. You have to hear it for yourself I guess.
They are brand new, but I think they'll keep most of the semi-brightness. For someone looking for strings in between a traditional flatwound and roundwound sound these "Chromes" would be it.
They are also made in the USA like Ricks are.

The devil's spaun Fender strings are headed for the circular file...

I really like these strings! If anything, they help a Rick sound like a Rick (if that makes any sense).

Rickboy88 - did you notice the low E string from the flatwound Fenders having an odd way of vibrating and also having a problem staying in tune? Like it just vibrates different than the other 3 strings? I saw this with 2 sets and on 2 basses. Just curious.

I think I remember this on older Fender flatwound strings, but don't remember it from the latest set.
I also think I had stainless this time? (there was something different about them)

They do have different flatwound sets so its possible the cheapest (what I got) has the problem and the better (what you got this time) doesn't. I was just curious. Thanks for the reply.
