I was just looking at Sir Paul's 4001s in "The Beatles Gear" book and noticed it has walnut wings on the headstock as well. This bass was originally a FG before he hand painted it in dope smoking party at George's place one night (where George painted his strat "Rocky" and John painted the back of his Casino).

My question is; are the walnut wings on the 4000 series common and Rick is just getting back to something they discontinued or was Paul's bass special? And why cover up walnut with fireglo paint in the first place?

The Fireglo Rickenbacker finish is not a paint, it's a dye. It's translucent and the grain of the wood shows through.

This is true for all Rick burst finishes, including the new BBR.

Most Rickenbacker solid colors, however, are opaque paints. This includes JG, Seafoam, Azureglo, Turquoise, Desert Gold, Blue Boy, Silver, Ruby, Red, White, etc. The sole exception I'm aware of at this moment is Burgundyglo, which is translucent and through which grain can be seen.

Mapleglo is conversion varnish over sealer over barenaked wood.

Yes, the walnut wings were a standard feature before they were discontinued in the early '70s.

I just saw a mint '77 4001s that was all white except for the walnut headstock wings and the walnut stripe up the back of the neck.

I think that I have seen that same one in Totowa, NJ. Unfortunately, it's a refinish. The Walnut ends stopped in 1971 and the walnut stripe started after the ends dissapeared.
That bass looks beautiful but, besides being a refinish, has lots of non-original parts too. Tuners are newer, the treble pickup is a reissue horseshoe and the surround is upside down! Replacement tortiose shell pickguard also, if I recall.

We probably saw the same bass, although I remember the bridge pickup as being a high gain with the cover missing.

It's still quite pretty!

Okay... so I bit the bullet and ordered a new 4003 bass. I know I was knocked out by the maple glow with the walnut wings, but I've always always wanted a fireglo and I couldn't resist!

You won't regret it---fireglo over walnut wings looks absolutely phenomenal. Congrats.

I'm not sure how much of the walnut is going to show through the red part of the FG. You'll see more in the middle where the dye is applied lighter.

FG is an excellent choice though. That is my favorite as well

This new FG from Guitarville does not have the walnut wings.

Are the walnut wings new this year and across the whole 4003 line?
