I'm assuming that someone else will find the neck pickup to look suspicious, I'm thinking a high-gain painted to look like a toaster. Any insight?

If you took the polepieces off the neck pickup of my 4003, the plastic beneath is "toaster" shaped, so I think it's just a reflection of the camera flash. (you can see the polepieces under the strings)
If most bass hi-gains are similar, (mine was made in '96) then I'd say that's the original pickup.
