I recently inherited a model 4001 bass along with about six other guitars and I have no idea what I am doing! Someone told me the Rickenbacker could be worth up to $10,000 but I'm seeing most being sold for around $2,500. This bass is black with a couple dings to the body but still in good condition. Also it is in a great (vintage) case. If anyone can tell me what I can realistically get for it, I would greatly appreciate your help! Thanks

Also how can I find what year it was made?

Well, price depends on a whole lot of things such as age, condition, exact model, various collector "features" such as certain pickups, etc., etc. In general, a good condition 4001 goes between $1200 and $2500, higher if in better condition and more rare colors. Pre 1974 4001s with the checkerboard binding go for more too, and stuff from the '60s can get into outrageous territory.

As for finding the age, use the serial number on the jack plate and put it into the Serial Number Decoder under the "Service" tab on this website...

Interesting that someone asked this question, as I was going to ask the same thing, LOL! I have a 1977 4001 jetglo black Rick that I rarely ever play anymore (use my 4003 most of the time) and that I've held unto over the years mainly due to sentimental reasons (it was my first bass). It's in very good condition, so if what the previous poster says is true, I should at least be able to get some decent money for it!

Here is a rough ready reckoner for "common colour" (JG, MG, FG) 4001s, assuming excellent structural and cosmetic condition:

mid 1974-85: $1200 - $1700 Higains all round
early 1974: $1500 - $2000 Toaster neck pickup
1972-73: $2000 - $3500 Premium for full width inlays
1968-71: $3000 - $5000 Higain treble pickup
1967-68: $5000 - $8000 Horseshoe treble pickup
Pre '67: $8000+

Apologies for the width of the bands for earlier models, but they were made in much smaller numbers than in the mid to late 70s so the market is much thinner/choppier and transactions are few and far between.

"S" and "RM1999" models (the UK export "S" model) will generally sell at a premium to the regular deluxe 4001, as will models with special features (e.g. 21 fretters). As yours is Jetglo, it is unlikely to be a '60s 4001, but will be even more valuable if it is, as JG was a far less common colour back then.

Looks like you're pretty on the mark with those prices, Antipodean! Got $1700.00 for my '78 4001 on Ebay recently. Was hoping for more, but that seems to be at the top end of your price estimation. Sad to have to let her go, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. :-(
