I was just looking at a site with Bartolini pickups and thought I'd see what they have for the 4001 .... and as well as the neck and bridge pickups, they have:

"6JHSplit Coil add-on pickup designed as replacement for Rickenbacker 4001 Mute Compartment position."

Is this for real? there's no picture of it ... if it's a pickup in that area it must provide a real treble boost ...anyone heard of this, or seen one?

Not a Bartolini, but Cliff Burton apparently had a guitar single coil pickup mounted in there.

I have one of those bart things, you have to route the mute cavity a bit deeper to get the pickup in.
Sound wise you gain something but also lose something...

It's not only real, but it's been in production for over 35 years. I played a bass with one installed in it when I was a teenager. I thought it sounded thin. It comes from a time when there were only flatwounds (before Rotosounds became generally available in the USA and the USA string makers started making roundwounds as a primary item) and was a way to get more treble response out of a bass. Now we have roundwounds as the primary string, so the need for such a pickup has been obviated.

Bartolini makes a pickup that fits in the mute cavity. It does not add quality to the sound of a Ric at all. You can fit some jazz pickups in there if you remove the cover. I have done this. It is better than the bart but still not great. A guitar would also work. The problem is the location is not a good place for a pickup.

I think I'll put a Cadillac engine in my sport car and SUV wheels on it.
