This thread helped me to decide on whether to try the 5 string genre, without spending on a new bass which I might later not want. So, I planted 4 of 5 strings ,B E A D on my 4003 JG,which needed a string change anyhoo.Saved the G to use later.

:)

It'll probably need a setup with those strings.

It 'd probably need a setup with any string change, assuming a different gauge and wrap.
It plays well enough for le grande experimente, but if I decide to keep it that way (not Likely) then I'd have the nut slots worked on.
I'm more likely to restring it EADG, and buy a 5 stringer.I miss the G string.
The thought of buying an older 4004 and having it converted has entered my mind too. Also thought of converting the 2030,but that might be sacrilidge.

I'm still playing with it in the mancave, and have not yet taken it out to work.

BEAD is ok, but a 5 string is a better option. Standard D tuning is the best compromise, as you get a full step lower, but still have the high F string. I went DGCF on my Cheyenne seversl years ago, and once it was set up, it's stayed put ever since.

For what I need a lower tuning for, BEAD works very well. DGCF would not work.

Otay, experiment's over.I've restrung it normal.BTW, no problems with the neck having to handle bigger strings.
